The Image is Everthing

After my parting shot of yesterday about image being everything. I had a trip down to the old fishponds near Oldbury Hill.

North Kent is very dry at the moment. and the trees are shedding leaves rather than changing to the colours of Autumn.  I managed to get a few images that I was happy with though.

Post Penshurst.

A very interesting trip. Firstly there was only one photographer selling prints at the fair. Is subject was wildlife and some landscape. Stunning images but different from what I have in mind.

He was selling photographic prints. produced by a professional lab. Quality was very good, all his prints were matted and sold flat. I was thinking about selling prints rolled and unmatted, but I can see an advantage in selling prints flat. Less risk of damage customers want to see the print they are buying!, less bulky, easier to identify an image from stock.

There is no space to roll and unroll an unmatted print on a stand!

Card payment would be a must. Big prints were not moving as fast as smaller. 

Don't sell cards of images. If a customer has a cheaper option he will go for that. 

Presentation needs to be adequate, not stunning as the overall look is not ultra slick. Stand lighting is a must.  

And finally the image is everything.

Penshurst Craft Fair

A few more shots off poppy seed heads in  the studio tonight. Followed by plans for to visit to Penshurst Craft Fair The trip is for information only. To see if anyone is doing what I am planning. 

Are there any photographers selling prints?, if so what are they shooting? what is the product? charges? Stand layout? 

It should be an interesting day.

The Echinops seed heads are just about to collapse so I managed to get some images before it is too late.

After work there was a short opportunity to get out and get some images.

For once there was a blazing sunset.

There was a burnt out car at the bottom of our road today. Not something that we see everyday.

It did give the chance to get some interesting images of rusting metal.

Epson printers

Today I had a chance to have lunch and talk with an old friend. It has been some time since we had the opportunity to meet, so the conversation covered many areas.

What I was interested in was a new Epson printer he had purchased since I last saw him. He had bought an Epson 3800 The results that I saw were wonderful. It prints to the size I am thinking about, and the only problems with it that I can see are that it is sheet fed only, so no roll paper, and the cartridge size is 80 ml. There are 9 ink cartridges per load and they are about £45 per cart.

If I move up a printer to the Epson 4880 I would have the same print quality plus the ability to use roll media, and 220 ml cartridge at £70 per cart, it is also 9 cartridges for a full set.

The machine is larger, heavier and more expensive but cheaper to run.

I suspect that I will need to do some more research before I have an answer.

Slate Background

There is a piece of slate that has been sitting in my garage for many years. After it had been brought out and give a good clean I found that I had given one side a coat of clear varnish at some time in the past.

The other side has got rather scratched so for this shot I used the varnished side.
