Monochrome

I have been asked if I ever do monochrome? Well in a way yes, but not in the sense of how the question was being asked. If you are looking for classic B+W prints, deep blacks, lustrous whites and a balanced set of tones between then you will be disappointed. If you are looking for images with a limited colour pallet then I can do that. 

All these images were taken today near the Northfleet cement works. The silos are about to come down. The demolition has already started on the other side of them, and the air is damp from the dust supression sprays. 

The colours are 'as life' with just a slight tweak to colour balance to warm the images slightly.

Leaf Abstracts

Still working of leaves  today. The sun did not come out so I had no chance to do any work on location.

So more work with the collection I have in my studio.

Waverley revisited

This will be the 51st post I have made to the blog in it's present incarnation. So at this point it is perhaps a good idea to explain how most of the images get presented for the blog. 

I have always shot in what is called RAW format with all the digital cameras that I have owned. The first was a Nikon D1, then a Kodak proSLRn and for the past year a Nikon D700. The RAW format always produces larger files than a JPG file and needs processing in by software to produce a usable file. Also in the time since my first digital camera memory cards have become larger and cheaper. The first card I bought had a 160MB capacity and cost nearly £400. I now shoot onto a 8GB card that I got free with the camera. So although I still shoot RAW for all my images my camera now can also produces a small JPG file that has more than enough quality for the majority of the images I post to this blog.

But from time to time an image needs some work in post production to produce a file that is acceptable to post here. An example are two images I took on Sunday night of the SS Waverley steaming up the Thames at the end of the day. The image have a ND grad added to enhance the sky and some work on exposure and dynamic range. I think the files are worth the extra bit of work

Oak Leaves

Found an Oak tree with some interesting leaves just of Windmill Hill. Brought them back to the studio to do some magic on them.

Greenhithe

Again found a few moments to get down by the river at Greenhithe before work today. The sky was rather bland but I liked the way the shapes of the crane came together. I also found a bit of driftwood that I could use for a background. It will go into the growing collection!

Thames Panoramas

As we had some good friends staying for the weekend I did little in the way of images for the blog. The weather did give a wonderful evening light on Sunday and I had some time down at the river side, and shot some panoramas.

Again the colours caught my eye, the background is a granite bollard.

Morning on the Thames

Got out early this morning and went down to the Thames to see what was happening. The first image I did was of the reflections in the canal basin. The image has an almost symmetrical balance but just enough asymmetry to be interesting. 

After I got that shot I was just about to leave when I looked out onto the river and the SS Waverley paddling down river.
